9
Licence

10
11
These maps are scanned from a personal collection built up by Richard
12Fairhurst, the result of several years' scavenging in second-hand
13bookshops! Some are canvas, some folded paper, some flat; some are the
14New Popular Edition proper, but a few are War Office editions. These are
15scans of real, used documents, not a pristine 'for the record'
16collection.

19
Summary

20
21
22

23
24
You can do what you like with the tiles as long as you're not making any
25money from them.
26

27
28
You can trace as much as you like from these maps and then do
29whatever you like with the tracings - commercial or otherwise.
30
If you do trace anything from them, please consider putting your
31tracings in the public domain, so other people can benefit.
32
33
If you want the original scans in order to make money, please e-mail Richard Fairhurst at
34richard@systemeD.net and he might be able to come to an agreement.

35

38
Detail

39
40
Please note that this was designed as the licence for the scans that
41the tiles have been derived from. It needs rewording to exactly match what you would want to do with the tiles. As the tile were derived from the maps, they are covered by the same licence.

43
44
1. Introduction

45
46
This document sets out the terms of use under which you are granted
47permission to use these scans of the New Popular Edition and other maps
48of the period. By downloading the scans, you consent to these terms.
49No use is permitted of the scans other than set out in this
50document, unless agreed in writing with the copyright holder.

51
52
This document must be read in conjunction with the
53Creative
54Commons Attribution-NonCommercial Licence 2.5 as detailed below.

55
56
For the purpose of this document, you should note the following
57distinction:

58
59
60

61
The original documents were Crown Copyright Ordnance Survey. Because
62they are older than 50 years old, this copyright has expired.
63
The scanned images are © 2005 Richard Fairhurst.
64
No claim of copyright is made over the facts represented on
65the maps. You may therefore trace or automatically derive geographical
66information from the maps as you wish.
67

68
69
2. Copyright in the scans

70
71
The scanned images are licensed under the Creative Commons
72Attribution-NonCommercial Licence 2.5. You should read the full
73licence
74here.
75It is summarised in
76this
77'human-readable' document.

78
This forbids you from reproducing the scans for commercial purposes
79("any manner that is primarily intended for or directed toward commercial
80advantage or private monetary compensation") without the permission of
81the copyright holder.

82
83
For the avoidance of doubt, any provisions in the Creative Commons
84licence referring to "Derivative Work" do not apply to tracings
85(whether manual or automated), optical character recognition, or other
86representations of the geographic facts expressed on the maps. They
87apply to the scanned images and other images derived from
88them.

89
90
3. Making tracings from the maps

91
92
As stated above, you are free to trace or otherwise derive
93geographical information from the maps, and to distribute the
94resulting product as you wish.

95
96
You are very strongly encouraged to place any tracings you make
97in the public domain, so that others can benefit.

98
99
If you would like to negotiate other uses with the copyright
100holder, please e-mail Richard Fairhurst at
101richard@systemeD.net.
